For Design Miami 2023 in Miami, which will run from December 6th to 10th, artist and designer Fernando Laposse will present his crafted glass-like flowers, leaves, birds, and tree branch installation, the artist’s interpretation of nature’s cycle of pollination. He incorporates 3D-printed eco resin and sage starch into his floral landscape, coupled with lianas the artist himself gathered from a jungle in central Mexico and natural silk fibers dyed with a mixture derived from cochineal and marigold.

Commissioned by Maison Perrier-Jouët, Fernando Laposse is inspired by his fondness for and personal observations of the environment. The interconnected relationships between flora and fauna tug at the artist’s fascination, so much so that he sculpts his own interpretation of pollination in nature. Fernando Laposse delves into the role of flowers within the ecosystem and how they interact with and influence the species they are surrounded by.

By perusing and unfolding the process of pollination, he excavates its complex and harmonious interactions with the plants, insects, and animals that pollinate flowers. In his artistic installation for Design Miami, this scenery appears vivid and translucent, carried out by the lifelike trees that hold up the flora in their cyclic stages, from their budding phase to their fully bloomed period.

More than the arched branch that shoulders the flora, Fernando Laposse also sculpts a thematic landscape that features a bird pecking a flower’s pistils, its flapping wings caught frozen mid-flight. The viewers can see the presence of nature, detailed as a reference to the shared soft spot for the environment between the artist and Maison Perrier-Jouët. The soothing colors of the glass-like materials he employs to carve the bird and the nuances of beige for the flimsy paper he uses to fold into flowers allude to nature’s often nurturing effect on people.

Yet, underneath the ephemeral premise of his artistic installation with Maison Perrier-Jouët, Fernando Laposse still punctuates the ecological challenges nature faces at the hands of people. These burdens that the environment confronts due to human actions may be seen more in the artist’s overall practice. For the past 10 years, he has been working with native farmers in South Eastern Mexico to develop new materials and systems of production that can benefit the local community and the environment.

His conscious awareness of nature lends its ethos to his Maison Perrier-Jouët commission, which is on display in the company’s Tokyo pop-up space between October 11th and 29th, 2023. After this sojourn, his floral installation will be exhibited at Design Miami 2023 between December 6th and 10th, 2023.
